Monteriggioni!!

I apologize for the late download...I was planning to post more stuff last weekend and we ended up having a field trip, so I am posting images today.  Which means I have a huge number of things to catch up and show you guys, I don't know where to start!
I am going to jump into our studio trips, instead of my Florence discoveries, only because there is a lot of information that I want to cover from the field trips, so bear with me.

The first studio weekend consisted of three cities: Monterigionni, Pienza and Siena (in that order).  This post is of the first city.  The reason that this city was chosen for our architecture studio class is that everything is pretty intact since its construction in the early 1200s (1219, to be exact).  It is a cute, little city that can be walked in its entire length in less than 5 minutes.  The image below is what it looks like (which is probably the first image that comes up when u google the city):

Despite its size, Monteriggioni has all the ingredients of a typical Italian city: surrounding walls, central public square with church, city council hall, and cemetary.  It is built on a natural hill for defense, and has a castle with its fortifications.  We literally stayed here for exactly an hour, to get a feel of the "city" and sketch a bit.  That was probably the perfect amount of time to see everything.  Here are some pictures of what it looked like inside.

View of central square, with a really cute, small restaurant and chairs that sit in the square.  Also notice the clouds....small particles of snow would come down every now and then.  This was kind of a forewarning for the next city we went to, which I will mention later.

City council building to the left and church to the right, which also faces into the central square.  The fact that they share the same public space means that government and religion acted together (as apposed to them being separated) and also a sign that they were in control of or physically close to the Pope/Papacy.

Left: view of the main street.  Look!  There's Pheobe with her sketchbook! (far left)
Right: view from one of the wall's entryway that looks down the hill and onto highway we came from.
